Cold Temps & Highs Winds to Start the Workweek…

 

Synopsis:

The cold blast will stick around for a couple of days. Scattered snow showers inland today.  A Wind Advisory is in effect through this afternoon. Wind gusts of 45-50mph are quite possible. An intensifying area of low pressure over New England combined with a strong high pressure over the Northern plains will create a strong pressure gradient which results in high winds. Factor in the wind and the wind chills will be in the 20s tonight 30s on Monday. A far cry from the 60’s of Saturday.

The weather will cooperate for the big travel day Wednesday.  At this time Thanksgiving looks damp.

Today:

Clouds and sun with scattered snow showers, mainly inland.  Chilly and windy.  Highs will be in the lower 40s.  Wind chills in the 30s.  West wind at 15-30mph with gusts to 50mph.

Tonight:

Mostly cloudy, windy and cold. Lows near freezing in the City, the upper 20’s inland. West wind 15-30mph with gusts to 40mph.

Tuesday:

Mostly sunny, not as windy. Highs will be in the mid 40s.

Wednesday (Getaway Day):

Mostly sunny. Highs in the upper 40s.

Thanksgiving Day:

Chance of showers.  Highs in the lower 50s.

Friday:

Partly sunny.  Highs in the lower 50s.

Tale of Two Seasons This Weekend…

 

Synopsis:

It’ll be the tale of two seasons this weekend.  The warm bubble of high pressure moving off the coast will give us one more Spring-like day today.  A powerful cold front will move through tonight and usher in the coldest air of the season on strong West Northwest winds; it’ll feel like Winter on Sunday.  Snow showers are possible later tonight over the Northern suburbs.  A Wind Advisory has been posted for areas to the West of the City for later tonight and Sunday (These advisories will most likely cover the City and areas to the East later today).  Wind gusts of 45-50mph are quite possible.  Temperatures on Sunday will be almost 20º colder than today.  Factor in the wind and the wind chills will be in the 30s.  A major shock to the body.

The chill will remain with us through the early week.  The weather will cooperate for the big travel day Wednesday.  At this time Thanksgiving looks damp.  Showers are likely with readings around 50º.

May Feel For Friday…

Synopsis:

A warm stretch is on the way through Saturday. It will not feel like mid November as high pressure builds over the East coast with the lack of any cold air. In fact, today’s highs in the mid to upper 60s is the average temperature for early May!  Saturday will be the last hoorah for the usual warmth. An energized trough will develop along the East coast by Sunday. This will most likely bring down some of the coldest air this season so far and possibly some snow showers.

Even though parts of the tri-state area received some beneficial rain the last week which helped the dry conditions for those areas, many areas went almost rain-free.  Conditions have now advanced to Extreme drought over the mid-hudson valley.  Parts of Western NJ are border-line extreme as well.  Rainfall deficits for the year range from six to fifteen inches.  Reservoir levels are about 20% lower than the normal capacity of 75% for this time of the year.   No major rainfall is expected for the next 5 days.

Sunny and warm. Highs in the mid to upper 60s.  The record high is 73º.  The average high is 53º. Northwest wind at 5mph.

Tonight:

Clear. Lows near 50º in the City, the 30s inland. Northest wind at 5 mph.

More clouds than sun, windy and much colder.  Scattered rain and snow showers are possible.  Highs will be in the mid to upper 40s.

Aftn. Update: Heaviest Rain Moves N&E of City…

 

Synopsis:

The area of low pressure that gave some regions heavy rainfall this morning and afternoon will continue to move up along the coast (Rainfall amounts are posted above, some parts of Monmouth county and Northeastern NJ received over two inches). Rain will taper off from the City and to the South and West. Some sunshine is possible over Southern and Western areas and possibly by the coast later today. Tranquil conditions will return mid to late week with above average readings.

An energized trough will develop along the East coast by Sunday. This will most likely bring down some of the coldest air this season so far and possible some snow showers.

Any evening showers will end by the coast, otherwise becoming partly cloudy. Lows in the mid 40s in the City, the 30s inland. Northwest wind at 5-10mph.

A weak area of low pressure will affect the region today with periods of rain. The heaviest and steadiest rain will be along the coast and East of the City (expected rainfall map above). In fact some of our Western counties may receive little if any rain while Connecticut and Long Island can expect over a half inch to possible an inch.  Tranquil conditions will return mid to late week with above average readings.

The return flow around the high pressure today will cause the cold air to retreat rapidly and allow for above average temperatures this afternoon.  A weak area of low pressure may affect the region on Tuesday with showers.

Tranquil conditions will return mid to late week.  There a signs that an energized trough may develop along the East coast by next Sunday.  This is still a long way off but it’s something on the radar (no pun intended).
