Early AM Rain/Freezing Rain Well N/W to Clouds & Sun. Mild…

Synopsis:

The storm that gave the region a quick hitting heavy rain (freezing rain well North and West) will move from just East of NYC to Eastern New England today. The rain will taper off early this morning and skies will break for some sun (it will be so nice to see that great ball of fire in the sky!). Snowmelt will continue as temperatures pop well into the 40s, even some 50º readings to the South and over Long Island.

High pressure originating in Canada will influence our weather tonight into Wednesday. Temperatures will get well below freezing overnight with a refreeze of slush and water. Skies will be mostly clear.

Bright, but cold conditions are expected Wednesday. I don’t think too many will mind the cold as long as the sun is shining.

The next storm in this parade will be on Thursday. The potential is there for front end thump of accumulating snow Thursday. A few to several inches of snow is possible. The snow should start sometime in the morning.  Once again, the track of the storm will be very close to the region. This should change the snow to sleet and or freezing rain and rain later in the day Thursday or Thursday night. This also looks to be a significant precipitation producer. We’ll fine tune possible amounts and start times later today.

All of this should end as a mix on Friday morning with the some sun returning with readings in the mid 30s.

Saturday looks bright and chilly.

Stay Tuned.

Keep it here for a no nonsense, no hype forecast.

Quick Hitting Storm Overnight. Freezing Rain N/W. Rain Elsewhere…

Synopsis:

Tonight and Tuesday’s mornings storm will be a quick, but hard hitter. The storm will take a track up the Piedmont to just East of NYC by Tuesday morning. The precipitation will start within a few hours of midnight. The trend of warming this system up continues. This will result in temperatures getting above freezing along the coast and along the I-95 corridor and to the North and West of that interstate. Any freezing rain will go over to plain rain-good news. Over the far inland ‘burbs significant icing is possible with freezing rain. An Ice Storm Warning has been posted for Northwestern NJ and Orange County NY (1st map above). IF the temperature stays below 32º when the heaviest rain moves in overnight tonight, a serious icing situation will occur with possible downed tree limbs and power outages. My thinking continues that the areas most likely to see these conditions are Sussex and Orange counties of NY. Just South of there in the Ice Storm Warning area, hopefully it will change to rain just in time for some ice to just wet surfaces. With limited downed branches and power outages.

Many regions will receive around an inch of rain (2nd map above). With deep snowpack, clogged drains flooding of streets and highways are possible.

The storm will be moving rapidly and should be exiting our region by early morning Tuesday. The sun should return and readings will get into the 40s.

A well deserved brief break will greet us on Wednesday as a high pressure to the North delivers the sun and chill.

The next storm in this parade will be on Thursday. The potential is there for a thump of accumulating snow Thursday. A few to several inches of snow is possible. Once again, the track of the storm will be very close to the region. This will should in snow changing to sleet, freezing rain and rain later in the day Thursday and Thursday night. This also looks to be a significant precipitation producer. All of this should end as a mix or rain on Friday morning with the sun returning and readings rising into the lower 40s!

Stay Tuned.

Keep it here for a no nonsense, no hype forecast.

Tonight:

Freezing rain and rain developing (depending on location). Lows around freezing well North and West. The 30s in the NYC vicinity and nearby ‘burbs. Readings will rising to near 50º over Southern NJ and parts of Long Island by sunrise as the track of the inland riding storm brings up warm air from the South. Northeast to Southeast winds at 5-10mph.

Tuesday:

Early morning freezing rain well inland, rain elsewhere ending by 8am. The sun will make an appearance during the day. Mild. Highs will reach the 40s!

Wednesday:

A mix of sun and clouds. Colder. Highs in the upper 20s to around freezing.

Thursday:

Snow. Potential quick hitting accumulation. Changing to a mix, first at the coast and to the South. Highs 30º-35º.

Friday:

Morning mix/rain to sun. Mild. Highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s.

Saturday:

Partly sunny. Colder. Highs in the lower 30s.

Grey Presidents’ Day. Spotty AM Drizzle/Freezing Drizzle…

Synopsis:

We’ll continue the grey theme for Presidents’ Day. Spotty freezing drizzle or drizzle will occur this morning as a weak impulse moves offshore. Much of the day should be precipitation free (2nd map above). Highs will be in the mid 30s. The arrival of steadier rain and freezing rain has been delayed by several hours. The precipitation now looks to move in between 9pm and midnight from Southwest to Northeast.

Tonight and Tuesday’s mornings event will be a quick but hard hitter. The storm now looks to take a track up the Piedmont to just East of NYC by Tuesday morning. The trend of warming this system up continues. This will result in temperatures getting above freezing along the coast and along the I-95 corridor and just to the North and West of that interstate. Any sleet or freezing rain will go over to plain rain-good news. The track here is key. Arctic high pressure will be to our North. Over the far inland ‘burbs significant icing is possible with freezing rain. An Ice Storm Warning has been posted for Northwestern NJ and Orange County NY. IF the temperature stays below 32º when the heaviest rain moves in overnight tonight, a serious icing situation will occur with possible downed tree limbs and power outages. My thinking continues that the  areas to see these conditions are Sussex and Orange counties of NY. Just South of there in the Ice Storm Warning area, hopefully it will change to rain just in time for a bit of ice to just wet.

The storm will be moving rapidly and should be exiting our region by mid-Tuesday morning. The sun should quickly return and readings will get to around 40º-a heatwave!

A well deserved brief break will greet us on Wednesday as a high pressure to the North delivers the sun and chill.

The next storm in this parade will be on Thursday. The potential is there for a thump of accumulating snow Thursday.  Once again, the track of the storm will be very close to the region. Friday:

Morning rain to sun. Mild. Highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s.

Grey, But Dry Valentine’s Day. Temps Get Above Freezing…

Synopsis:

A weak storm well offshore moving East combined with a vigorous jet stream moving from South to North up the East coast will result in plenty of clouds for Valentine’s Day. It will be dry and get this- temperatures will get above freezing for the first time in what seems like weeks!

Tonight will be cloudy with lows at or below freezing in all areas.

We’ll continue the grey theme for Presidents’ Day. A bit of light snow, freezing rain and sleet is possible later in the day ahead of the next developing storm to our Southwest. This will be a scattered and light event. Highs will be in the mid 30s.

Monday night and Tuesday’s mornings event will be more robust. The storm now looks to take a track very close to our coastline or even on the coast as it heads North from Virginia. This will result in temperatures getting above freezing along the coast and near the I-95 corridor. Any sleet or freezing rain will go over to plain rain. The track here is key. Arctic high pressure will be to our North. North and West of I-95 and into the inland ‘burbs significant icing is possible with freezing rain. This looks to be a quick mover and should be exiting our region during late Tuesday morning. Afternoon sun is likely with readings several degrees above freezing.

A well deserved brief break will greet us on Wednesday as a high pressure to the North delivers the sun and chill.

The next storm in this parade will be on Thursday. The potential is there for snow/mix and or rain. This also looks to be a significant precipitation producer.

On & Off Light Snow, Sleet, Freezing Rain Overnight. Slick Spots…

Synopsis:

A developing coastal low off the Carolinas will move Northeast and throw on and off light snow, sleet and freezing rain our way overnight. There will not be a lot of precipitation, but it doesn’t take much to cause slick conditions. A light accumulation of sleet and glaze is possible. A Winter Weather Advisory has been posted for the NYC vicinity, Long Island and most of NJ (1st map above).

The weak storm will move up and well off the NJ coast by Sunday morning. On and off light sleet, freezing rain and rain will wind down in the early morning. Skies should remain mostly cloudy for Valentine’s Day afternoon and get this- temperatures will get above freezing!

We’ll continue the grey theme for Presidents’ Day. Skies will be cloudy. A bit of light snow, freezing rain and sleet is possible later in the day ahead of the next developing storm to our Southwest. This will be a scattered and light event. Highs will be in the mid 30s.

Monday night and Tuesday storm will be more robust. The storm now looks to take a track very close to our coastline. This will result in temperatures getting just above freezing along the coast and near the I-95 corridor. If this holds true, any sleet or freezing rain will go over to plain rain. The track here is key. Arctic high pressure will be to our North. North and West of I-95 and into the inland ‘burbs significant icing is possible with freezing rain. This looks to be a quick mover and should be exiting our region during the afternoon. Late day sun is possible.

Light Snow, Sleet & Frz. Rain Moves in Later Today NYC & South…

Synopsis:

The weekend will be grey. A developing coastal low off the Carolinas will move Northeast and throw some light snow, sleet and freezing rain our way later this afternoon and night. A bit of light snow may fall at the onset Saturday afternoon on the Northern fringe of the advancing precipitation (2nd map above) but the majority of the precipitation will be ice.

The weak storm will move up and well off the NJ coast by Sunday morning. Light sleet freezing rain and rain will wind down on Sunday morning. This low will not be a big precipitation producer. A light accumulation of sleet and glaze is possible. A Winter Weather Advisory has been posted for the NYC vicinity, Long Island and most of NJ (1st map above) for slippery conditions. Skies should remain mostly cloudy for Valentine’s Day afternoon.

Presidents’ Day now looks cloudy. The latest computer guidance keeps enough moisture with an active jet stream moving up the Piedmont to produce an on and off light mix. This will be a scattered  and light event. Highs will be around freezing.

The next system will be more robust and will affect our weather Monday night into Tuesday with the potential of an ice storm. This storm will be a significant precipitation producer. The track here is key. Arctic high pressure will be to our North. How much warm air works in is yet to be determined. The threat is there for some snow (this now looks to occur well to the North), freezing rain and or sleet for much of the area. Rain may fall for a time over Southern sections as well. This looks to be a quick mover and should be exiting our region during the afternoon.

A well deserved brief break will greet us on Wednesday.

The next storm in this parade will be on Thursday. The potential is there for snow/mix and or some rain. This also looks to be a significant precipitation producer.

Needless to say, we are in a very active pattern.

Frigid Overnight. Sleet Moves in Later Saturday…

Synopsis:

Tonight will be mostly cloudy and frigid once again with lows dipping into the single digits in spots outside the urban corridor.

The weekend will be grey. Any glimpse of sun early Saturday morning will fade behind lowering and thickening clouds. A developing coastal low over the Carolinas will move Northeast and throw some light snow or a mix our way Saturday afternoon and night. This looks like mainly a sleet and freezing rain event. Yes, a bit of light snow may fall at the onset Saturday afternoon on the Northern fringe of the advancing precipitation (2nd map above).  The weak storm will move up and off the NJ coast by Sunday morning. Light sleet freezing rain and rain will wind down on Sunday morning. This low will not be a big precipitation producer. A light accumulation of sleet and glaze is possible. A Winter Weather Advisory has been posted for parts of NJ (1st map above) for slippery conditions. Skies should remain mostly cloudy for Valentine’s Day afternoon.

Clouds, Some Sun Friday. Cold…

Synopsis:

A weak system will pass well South of the area today. Clouds will dominate with peeks of sun. Readings will remain below freezing.

Tonight will be partly cloudy and frigid once again with lows dipping into the single digits in spots outside the urban corridor.

The weekend will start with a bit of sun Saturday morning but clouds will lower and thicken. A developing coastal low over the Carolinas will move Northeast and throw some light snow or a mix our way Saturday evening and night. The storm will move up and off the NJ coast by Sunday morning. Light snow, mix and rain along the Southern coastal areas will wind down on Sunday. This low will not be a big precipitation producer. A light accumulation of snow and ice is possible, especially inland (think a coating). Skies should remain mostly cloudy for Valentine’s Day afternoon.

Presidents’ Day now looks more grey. The latest computer guidance keeps enough moisture with an active jet stream moving up the Piedmont to produce an on and off light mix. This will not be a big deal, but we’d like some sun already! The cold will remain with highs only around 30º.

The next storm will affect our weather Monday night into Tuesday with the potential of snow or a mix. This storm will should be a significant precipitation producer. The track here is key. Arctic high pressure will be to our North. How much warm air works in is yet to be determined. The threat is there for significant snow, freezing rain and or sleet for much of the area. Early Snow Southern NJ Ends This AM. Clouds, Some Sun. Cold….

Synopsis:

The weak low pressure system that gave the area a period of snow last night into this morning will move out to sea. Any snow over Southern NJ will end during the morning hours. A mix of clouds and some sun is expected today with readings between 30º-35º.

Tonight will be partly cloudy and very cold as high pressure influences our weather from Canada. Lows will be in the single digits well inland.

A second weak system will pass well South of the area on Friday. Any morning clouds will give way to mainly sunny skies. Despite the bright conditions it will be bitterly cold with readings only in the 20s as the high continues to dominate.

The weekend will start with a bit of sun Saturday morning but clouds will lower and thicken and I am introducing the chance of late day snow with a developing coastal low over the Carolinas. Snow or a mix is likely Saturday night. The storm will move up and off the NJ by Sunday morning. Snow or a mix will wind down by late morning. An accumulation is possible. Amounts are yet to be determined, but it doesn’t look like a “big one” at this time. Valentine’s Day Afternoon will feature the return of some sun with highs in the mid 30s.

A mix of sun and clouds will greet us for Presidents’ Day. The cold will remain with highs only around 30º.

Period of Snow Tonight. Light North, Heavier South…

Synopsis:

A weak system will pass to our South tonight into Thursday morning. This will produce a period of snow from around midnight into the morning hours. The snow will be light and intermittent to the North, steadier and heavier to the South. The snow will end around sunrise to the North and West and taper off at the coast by mid morning. The steadier precipitation has moved North so amounts have been raised throughout the region. The jackpot zone for snow will be Southern areas where 3″-5″ is likely. The sun will return during the day with readings near freezing.

A second weak system will pass well South of the area on Friday. Any morning clouds will give way to mainly sunny skies. Despite the bright conditions it will be bitterly cold with readings only in the 20s as Arctic high pressure influences our region.
