Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Parts of NJ Until 11PM…

 

Synopsis: 

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 11pm for parts of NJ.  Some of the storms may become severe this evening. Keep any eye to the sky for threatening weather conditions.  Severe thunderstorms contain winds in excess of 58mph and or large hail.  Vivid lightning and torrential rain may accompany any storm.

A cool front (more like a humidity buster) will move through early Wednesday morning. This will result in warm but less humid conditions into Friday- a welcome relief.

Tonight:

Scattered evening thunderstorms, some possibly severe, otherwise partly cloudy..  Lows in the mid 70s in the City and urban corridor, 65º-70º inland.  South wind will become West at 8-12mph.

Wednesday:

Partly sunny with low humidity.  Highs in the upper 80s.  West to Northwest wind at 10-20mph.

Thursday:

Partly sunny. Highs in the upper 80s.

Friday:

Partly sunny with readings in the upper 80s.

Humidity Roars Back Today. Day 6 of Heat Wave, Maybe.

 

Synopsis: 

The heat wave may end today in many areas if the temperature doesn’t reach 90º.  It’ll be close for the City.  If the mercury hits 90º or higher in Central Park it’ll be day 6 of the heat wave (consecutive days of 90º plus). The humidity once again will soar making for a heat index within a few degrees of 100.  Showers and thunderstorms are possible just about anytime under hazy skies. Some of the storms may become severe later in the day. Keep any eye to the sky for threatening weather conditions after 2pm. A cool front (more like a humidity buster) will move through by Wednesday morning. This will result in warm but less humid conditions into Friday- a welcome relief.

Hazy, very warm and humid with scattered thunderstorms.  Some of the thunderstorms may contain damaging winds.  Highs within a few degrees of 90. South wind at 10-2omph.

Day 5 of Heat Wave…

 

 

Synopsis: 

The oppressive heat and humidity is over as the heat dome has moved east. Today will still be hot. It’ll be day 5 of the heat wave for Central Park as it should hit 90º. What will be noticeable is the lower humidity.

The heat wave should end tomorrow as temperatures are expected to be just shy of 90º.  I’ll be more humid with scattered showers and storms during the afternoon.  A drier airmass will work in from the North and West for the mid and later portion of the week.  This will result in warm but less humid conditions into Friday- a welcome relief.

Today:

Partly sunny, hot and not as humid as recent days. Highs around 90º. North wind becoming South 5-10mph.

Tonight:

Partly cloudy and warm.  Becoming muggy by morning.  Lows in the mid 70s in the City and urban corridor, 65º-70º inland.  Light and variable wind.

We’ll have to contend with one more oppressive day as the Bermuda high continues to influence our weather. The heat wave will be taxing to the body. Hydrating will be of upmost importance. Temperatures will climb into the 90s and the very high humidity will translate into a heat index of 100º-108º. The threat of afternoon storms will be spotty in nature.  The Humidity will lower on Monday despite highs in the lower 90s.

The heat wave is expected to break on Tuesday with readings in the upper 80s.

In all my years of forecasting in the NYC area I don’t think I remember a time with such high humidity with temperatures in the 90s on Saturday.  Some areas had heat indices up to 115º, virtually unheard for these parts.

Temperatures will climb into the 90s and the very high humidity will translate into a heat index of 100-110º+ through the weekend.  The heat will peak today. The threat of afternoon storms will be spotty in nature. Much of the time will be dry. Overnight lows in the City and urban areas will remain in the lower 80s. Yes, August’s unpleasant side will be with us for some time.

A strong Bermuda high pressure system will put the region into a deep into a Southwest flow today through Sunday.  This will result in a hot and tropical airmass. A heat wave is expected. Temperatures in the 90s combined with the high humidity will translate into a heat index of 97º-105º+ through the weekend.  The heat will peak on Saturday.  The threat of afternoon storms will be spotty in nature. Much of the time will be dry. Yes, August’s unpleasant side will be with us for some time.

Synopsis: 

High pressure off the coast will establish a tropical airmass over the region today.  The push of humid air along with a weak disturbance in the upper atmosphere will cause hit or miss showers and thunderstorms today.  Many areas will be storm-free.  As the region gets deep into a Southwest flow Thursday through Saturday the threat of afternoon storms will be in the spotty category.  Much the time will be dry. Besides the PM storm threat, the 3 H’s will be the top story. Temperatures will top 90º late week into the weekend with high levels of humidity.  The heat index will approach  100º in many areas.  A potential heat wave is on the way. Yes, August’s unpleasant side will be with us for some time.

Magnificent Monday…

 

Synopsis: 

High pressure set up shop over the Northeastern states.  This high will dominate our weather through Wednesday, the result- a string of beautiful days.  The humidity will be very low for August standards.  By Thursday the high will move off  the coast.  This will set up a warmer and more humid flow for the end of the week.  A spot afternoon storm can’t be ruled out though most areas will remain rain-free.
