Sct’d Storms Overnight. Elsa’s Rains Arrive Late…

Synopsis:

Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms will continue into early tonight from central NJ and to the North. Torrential rain has been occurring with these storms along with isolated damaging winds. At the same time Tropical Storm Elsa will begin moving into coastal areas of NJ later tonight. This is the timeframe when a quick hitting period of heavy rain is possible. The exact track of Elsa will determine how much rain will fall and where the jackpot zone will be. At this time a general one to four inches of rain is possible. The latest track would put the swath of heaviest rain over the I-95 corridor and to the East. A Flash Flood Watch is up for much of the areas for tonight and Friday morning.

A period of gusty winds is possible along the immediate coast of NJ and Central and Eastern Long Island (thinking possible gusts 40- 50mph at this time). A Tropical Storm Warning is up for coastal areas. High surf and dangerous rip currents are expected.

The storm will be a quick mover and the rain should end during the morning to midday hours from West to East. The sun will return by late morning to early afternoon depending on location. Readings will be near the average high of the mid 80s. The humidity will remain high.

The weekend will be more tranquil as high pressure will build in. This will result in mainly sunny skies and warm temperatures with lower humidity.

The heat and humidity will return for the beginning of the week as a Southerly flow once again takes hold around a Western Atlantic high pressure system. Hazy skies are expected with isolated afternoon storms.

Stay tuned.
